Bonza
The Bonza apple is unique to Australia, in fact the Bonza variety originated in Batlow after being cultivated by chance over 30 years ago. The Bonza has a green/cream background colour with 50-60% red blush. The variety is characterised by a very white firm flesh, they are odd looking in shape and hold a semi-sweet flavour. Batlow Bonzas are an early season apple and are available from March-May.
Braeburn
The Braeburn originated in New Zealand by crossing a Lady Hamilton with a Granny Smith. The variety has a very strong red and gold green colour skin. It is a good eating apple with firm, juicy flesh and a sweet-tart flavour. The flesh of Braeburns is a pale cream colour, and lends itself well to use in salads and apple crumble. Batlow Braeburns are available from May-November.
Fuji
The Fuji apple originated in Japan in the 1940’s and has a crisp, super sweet flavour. Fuji apples are round with a dull pink colour, and have a dense texture. Batlow Fujis are available from mid April-October.
Granny Smith
Recognised around the world. The Granny Smith was grown by accident in 1868 by Maria Anne Smith, in the Ryde district of New South Wales. Usually Granny Smiths have a bright green finish to the skin, however Granny Smiths grown in Batlow will often have a pink glow to them this is a result of a high altitude climate. For this reason Batlow Granny Smith apples are unique and special as they eat sweeter than most. We love our blushing grannies! Batlow Granny Smith apples are available from May/June each year.
Jonathon
An old favourite with many people the Jonathon apple is an early season variety you will find available between March and April. Jonathon’s are great for salads as they have an intense flavour to them. This variety has a deep and vibrant red colour, yellowish flesh and spicy aroma.
Pink Lady
Pink Lady™ is the brand name for the best quality apples from the Cripps Pink variety. The Cripps Pink variety originated in Western Australia by crossing Golden Delicious and Lady William varieties. Pink Lady apples are now increasingly popular around the world and are characterised by their true pink colour. Batlow Pink Lady apples are available from the end of May-October.
Red Delicious
The Red Delicious is the most recognised variety in Australia and one for which the Batlow area is famous. Batlow horticulturists and growers have spent many years redeveloping this variety and are proud to know consistently produce an apple that is super crisp, juicy and flavoursome. The colour of Red Delicious can be either dark crimson red, or greenish yellow colour with red stripes. Batlow Red Delicious apples are available all year round. Batlow Red Delicious eats very well toward the latter half of the year.
Royal Gala
Originated in New Zealand by crossing Golden Delicious and Kidd's Orange varieties. It was referred to as Royal Gala after Queen Elizabeth II declared her preference for it. Galas have a slightly sweeter taste than most apple varieties. Galas are dense and crisp in texture. Batlow Royal Galas are available from late February-August
Sundowner
Sundowner™ is the brand name for the best quality apples from the Cripps Red variety. Sundowner apples are very similar in taste, colour and texture to Pink Lady™ apples. The weather during growing periods determines the skin colour variation from greenish red to deep pinky red. Sundowner apples are not overly firm, but are flavoursome in eating, with an excellent balance of sweetness. Batlow Sundowner apples are available from the middle of May-December
