The Granny Smith was grown by accident in 1868 by Maria Anne Smith, in the Ryde district of New South Wales. Usually Granny Smiths have a bright green finish to the skin, however Granny Smiths grown in Batlow will often have a pink glow to them. This is a result of a high altitude climate making them sweeter than most.
